Bright Spots

Yesterday I held a housewarming party at my new home. For the first hour, my guests met at my townhouse, and then we walked to the complex clubhouse which I had reserved in advance. I did this as it has a huge, furnished living room, well set up kitchen and more room for everyone. Plus, my 93 year old mother could not have walked the 14 stairs to my second floor town house. My dear friend of twenty three years spent Friday night with me and helped tremendously with the party preparations and success. She is my (saddened) friend I recently posted of, and she told me these functions were just what she needs to escape her solitude and give her something new to do.
I invited many people. Thirteen to fourteen guests showed up. I was, quite frankly, a bit sad (at first), as some who assured their attendance did not show up. A few people who were unsure of their schedule, attended. What heart warming thoughts filled me as the guests smiled, complimented me and my new location and were here to let me know they care. (smile here as it was endearing.)Three of my guests I have known for twenty some years, as we raised and shared our kids from preschool age through high school graduation. I loved seeing my helpful friend reconnect with them as she was one who shared those child rearing years, in that small, little community from which I just left. She had left that community in the early 2000's to move to Hawaii, and after three years there, relocated back near our small town to reconnect with the people she loved and family she cared for.(During this time is when she divorced.) My son from Seattle attended my party as a surprise. That was the brightest spot of all.
Each guest brought either wine, plants or flowers for me. My mother & brother brought new dish towels and candles. I was so surprised for the unexpected gifts. I was touched by each and every gift and thought bestowed upon me.
When all was said and done, of course, my friend and I enjoyed some wine and conversation on my cute, little balcony. Her spirits were brighter and I am proud of her perseverance in working with a friend of hers, on his job sites, to earn some cash while she looks for permanent work. As she states, "it keeps me going and gives me a purpose." (smile here). She just left this afternoon and I know I appreciated her help and presence, and she appreciated the invitation and the mingling with old friends and new.
This is a bright spot I need to remember when I am feeling saddened by my pending divorce, and the loss of the man I love. I have dear, long standing friends that I love and who genuinely care about my happiness and well being.
