Bust A Move
On my rushing out of the door yesterday morning before work, I grabbed my coffee, purse, work files and a few CD's from a stack on my counter. I trotted up the stairs and fumbled with the car door key and lock...yes...my hands were full...and no...I don't have an electronic door opener anymore. I finally made it into the front seat, situated my pile of stuff and zipped towards work.
After a couple of sips of coffee and a few relaxing breaths, I grabbed a CD and slid it into the player. It was from a CD set titled, "Pop Music from 1976-1999." Talk about a journey in memories during my journey to work! The classic pop songs from Earth Wind and Fire, James Taylor, Carole Carpenter, John Melloncamp, Neil Diamond and many many others filled the car. It was quite amusing to listen to the songs and...yes... I did bop my shoulders back and forth a bit. During this drive, I kept thinking about my co workers...Bobbi is about 47, Brian and Kim are about 55, me-52 and then Donovan is only 26. I knew that if I played those tunes, they'd relate to them and know them as I do. I decided I'd get our little office stereo going for some unusual background music in the office when I arrived. This thought actually jazzed me up a bit and I thought it would be a great way to start a Friday, especially after the busy work week.
Donovan and I opened the office and I immediately started looking for the stereo and enlisted his help. He found it stashed in the training room and I explained my plan. If nothing else, I told him, it would bring some smiles and laughs.
We placed the stereo near the entrance and I popped in a CD while he read the cover and laughed because he knew many titles. I joked and said I bet when everybody gets here, they laugh and "bust a move." I said me and Bobbi could teach him how to do that if he wanted. Of course he declined.
Bobbi's car came into view and while she was parking and approaching the office, Donovan and I synchronized "Boogie Nights" playing upon her opening the door. She stepped into the office, she stopped and tilted her head for a listen, laughed and did some side stepping and "boogieing" for a minute. That of course amused Donovan and I, and of course, partial mission accomplished. She looked at the CD case to read the song titles and artists, laughing the whole time, and sharing stories about some of her memories of the songs. I told her it was Flashback Friday. Then, here comes the boss, Brian.
We watch him park his car and Donovan rewound the CD to play Boogie Nights again. Brian stepped inside, took a few steps, laughed and 'busts a move." I must say, Donovan was amused by us because we all started snapping our fingers and doing a couple of quick disco moves. Brian came to read the CD cover as well and joked and told stories about the songs. He told Donovan, "If I'd have known, I would have worn my bell bottoms and bright blue vest."
Despite the simplicity of the act, it was surprising how much more upbeat our Friday morning was. We played a few of the CD's all morning and smiled or snapped our fingers each time we walked through the lobby. Mission...accomplished.
